What does classic mean?

Classic is a noun which means something of recognised and established value, the study of ancient Greek and Latin history, or a major sports tournament.

As an adjective, classic means typical of its kind or something that is considered to be of high quality after being judged over a long period of time.

For example:

  • This is a classic example of why you need an editor (typical of its kind).

  • She will play in the Birmingham Classic this year (sports).

  • She studies classics at university (ancient Greek and Latin history).
